Comfort, stability and protection – that is what you are looking for when you wear safety footwear. You do not want to be worried that if something heavy falls on your foot, then you are going to have some damage to your toes or the top of your foot. You want to know that what you are wearing on your feet will protect you.
If your job requires you to wear footwear for protection, then you need to check it does all these things and that is also lasts. It is no good for your shoes to wear out after a few months when you have heavy duty work to get on with. Durability is the key.
Some of the footwear that is suitable for wearing whilst doing your job may have laces to do up. Make sure they are tucked in properly with no loose bits hanging out – for safety reasons, of course.
Most footwear for jobs where safety is an issue like fire fighters, the police, factory and hospital work, work on building sites and road works is black as this is a good uniform colour. It does not show up the dirt and looks smart even when you have been wearing them for years.
Keeping them clean will add to their long life, so a polish every week is a good idea. It is a bit like having school shoes, once you get into the habit of giving them a brush and a polish every week you will not even have to think about it and will just get on with it as part of your routine.
