Eyes are precious; injury not only causes huge levels of pain but can lead to permanent damage, making day to day living much more difficult. Certain work and leisure situations can put your eyes at risk so understanding and selecting the correct safety glasses is of paramount importance.

Typical injuries include damage from glare, splashing from chemicals, tools such as screwdrivers or spanners, flying objects such as metal from welding, small particles such as dust from sand papering or drilling and radiation. If you are likely to encounter any of these issues then eye protection is a must, although eliminating potential hazards and reducing risk should also be high on the agenda.

The type of hazard that you are exposed to will dictate the type of safety glasses you choose. There are several varieties available, including anti-glare, wraparound, eye shields, safety glasses, welding glasses and impact goggles. Working with radiation or intense heat requires the use of welding glasses or helmets, face shields or safety goggles designed for the job.

If you work in a dusty environment or in an area of particles or likely flying objects, for example when working with wood, metal or glass, the minimum protection should be safety glasses with side shields to protect the eye from all directions. For those who work with chemicals, protection against splashing should include safety goggles that form a tight shield around the eye. Choose glass for scratch resistance and protection from chemicals or light weight plastic or polycarbonate to protect from welding splatter. Whichever goggles you choose ensure your eyes are fully protected and reduce the risk of permanent injury.
