Originally worn by soldiers out on the battlefield, epaulettes (from the French, 'little shoulder') are traditionally worn as an insignia of rank, status and authority. Today, simpler epaulettes are worn not only by members of the armed forces but also by security guards and police officers, as part of a security epaulettes uniform. Staff wearing these uniforms are not only instantly recognisable to colleagues but can also be identified by members of the public as a figure of authority; epaulettes signify both respect and safety.

While the heavily decorated, ornate epaulettes of servicemen and guards may add a touch of glamour to an official ceremony, for daily work wear, simple epaulettes sliders are a much more feasible alternative. With their easy to use design, staff are able to quickly slide the epaulettes on to a work shirt at the start of a shift, removing them just as easily to wash the shirt. While dark navy or black epaulettes are a clear symbol of authority, epaulettes sliders also come in a range of colours to suit different uniforms, including green, white, red, orange and yellow. To further distinguish staff or individuals, epaulettes can be customised: most companies will offer a customisation service through which epaulettes can be printed with whatever text, number or symbol the client's position or employer necessitates. Most epaulettes are cotton and, while they can be re-used for years, the epaulettes are cheap enough to be easily replaced in the event of damage or loss.

Whatever colour or text you choose for your epaulettes, the security epaulettes are a universal signifier or authority which will make staff recognisable and respected.
